I am the bass player of the pop-punk band, Avery. We wrote, recorded, and toured from about 1999-2010, and reunited in the summer of 2019.
My Story
Inspired by the punk community we were a part of at the age of 15, my best friend, Janet, and I decided to start a band. The only problem was, I didn’t play an instrument. Janet had a drum set in her basement, so I picked up the bass, and together we started a band in 1999 called Avery. What started as just bass and drums (with Janet singing while playing drums), evolved over the years, with Jess coming on as guitarist, Janet moving up to vocals and keys, and a variety of drummers completing the lineup.
Over the next 10+ years, Avery played hundreds of shows including multiple festivals, toured nationally, and released two records. Avery songs were also featured on multiple television shows on Nickelodeon, Disney and MTV. The band also wrote the theme song for a commercial for Rebelle Friendship Bags.
Playing in and managing a band during the most formidable years of my life was an honored experience that helped instill a sense of entrepreneurship, resilience, and passion that I’ve thrived on for the many years since.
In the summer of 2019, Avery was asked to play a series of reunion shows with fellow bands from our early 2000 music scene. It was an amazing, joyful experience that showed us that the fire we have inside for playing music is still burning strong, even after a 10 year hiatus. We had so much fun that we decided to play out a few times a year going forward!
